Wood + Wire
The sound of Wood + Wire is clearly more American than the three previous albums in its simplicity. "It's a bigger sound made with fewer elements. The recording studio was set up with everyone playing in the same room without separation between instruments. What you hear is the entire band feeling around each other's unlearned parts, which creates more sonic space than in his earlier records." Released March 1998.

The Sportsmen- "Spirited"
I was just going through some soul records and just picked a bunch of songs I thought were cool, and I wrote some new ones in that style.
“It takes things from Rod Stewart records, Otis Redding records. Like, we play an Allen Toussaint song with a shuffle beat from a Gary Glitter song, and made something that is very much a CvS thing." Released Nov 1999.

CA Redemption Value
A return to the brilliant pop rock sound, this "battle with Seattle" 2005 album has the highs and lows - energetically, and emotionally - with the euphoric three-minute-pop-miracle Symphony of Love, and the heartbreaking Why Go Alone?

The Wild Horse
Somewhere between the ensemble sound of Wood + Wire, and the one man musical army of his earlier CDs, the songs here are sometimes serious and personal (“Glory Days Are Gone,” “Identity”), but then whimsical and humble (“Ooh Mama Mama,” “Downtown”). While based in the typical rock ensemble instrumentation, The Wild Horse has a wide landscape of new sounds for CvS, including harmonica, keyboards, and unique samples. Released December 2002.
